It had been a long time since Mike had seen Venno. A long, long time. For them anyway. A year - two years? Maybe even three. He'd lost track of the time, the days, his feelings. He'd moved on a lot of ways. He wasn't living in York, he was now just finishing a course in Music Technology at the Sheffield Hallam University and planning on trying to get a job from it, but planning first to go home for a while and sort out his overall direction in life. While completing his final exams he surfed the internet for possible job opportunites in and around North Yorkshire and thought about what he really wanted to do now.

When his exams were completed and the celebrating was over Mike packed up and left his uni flat, ready for the next step. It was strange to get back, finally to York, his constant home. Exiting the train he automatically began the walk to his old flat, eventually realising, as he reached the real city centre, that it would never be quite the same as before he'd left. He wasn't the same person, wasn't in the same situation and didn't want the same things. He wanted to earn some money (as quickly as possible) and travel the world some more. Maybe form a band, get a good job and settle down - eventually. He pulled the heavy case with surprising ease, lugging it around for a bit before heading to his sister's house on the edge of the city. The bus was uncomfortably busy, and Mike was subdued. He was tired from the journey and looking forward to seeing May again. It would be nice to catch up...

May lived in a victorian terrace in Holgate. By the time he reached the house he was pretty exhausted and looking forward to some r & r. He rang the doorbell and was greeted by May, who although was only 21 years old she was at least 5 months gone in her pregnancy. Her and her partner Jeremy were childhood sweathearts and had been inseperable since high school. Mike was very happy for her, she had everything she'd ever wanted.
"May!" He grinned, letting go of the suitcase and stepping forward to give her a big hug.
"Shouldn't you get your-." She shut up with the hug, smiling as he carefully enveloped her in his arms.
"I'm not glass, Michael." He laughed.
"God, only you would call me Michael." He let go of her and she led him inside, eager to know how he was.

The next day Mike recruited his friend Laela bright and early for some job-hunting. They went around music stores, put ads in papers, looked into agencies that were looking for specific music technitions, checked out guitar shops until finally, in a last desperate plea for a job they tried Fibbers, promising each other a starbucks as a reward for all their hard work. Now, Mike wasn't thinking about Venno, or expecting to see him and hadn't even considered the possbility of his ex being in York at exactly the same time of place as him, until, as he and Laela went round the venue to enter from the back, Venno was just coming out of the door. Mike didn't immediately recognise him, he was too busy talking with Laela to notice too much about the small guy with the longish blonde-brown hair passing them on the way to the door. But something caught his eye and he looked back, suddenly making the inevitable connection. A feeling like being dumped in white-hot fire started in his throat and spread down into his stomach. He stopped dead, openly staring at the retreating figure of his ex-lover.The shock lasted several moments and when Venno disappeared round the corner he forced himself back round, plastered a smile on his face and entered Fibbers for the first time in several years.

It had changed inside the small venue. It was darker - due to the outside being painted black mainly - the windows had been filled in and severl doors had been fitted for the stage and backstage area that had previously been just empty doorways. The stairs near the stafe leading to a raised seating area had also been taken away and replaced with a wooden low-wall. It felt more claustrophobic and ridiculously dingey but it was still the same Fibbers, on small place that held a lot of good memories from his past.
"Mike!" Cassandra appeared from behind the bar, stereotypically sorting out some tickets for upcoming shows. It was so...normal that Mike smiled naturally and responded in kind.
"Cass! How's it going?!"
"Pfft - same old same old. I haven't seen you in, like, forever! I heard you were at Uni - how did that work out?"
"Good good, yeah just finished my course a few days ago. How about yourself? Figure out your dream music career?"
"I wish," She rubber-banded a stack of tickets together, stored them in a drawer beneath the counter and started on the next lot, "Na. Maybe one day I'll get that call..." She grinned in the face of her failings.
"Never say never," Mike agreed, "Hey, this is Laela by the way, Laela - Cassandra. Sorry about being so rude..."
"No worries - I'm used to it." The two women smiled and nodded politely, ignoring Mike's indignation.
"So, don't suppose you know of any jobs going do ya?" Cassandra made a face, thinking.
"Dunno, what you looking for?"
"Bands needing technitions?" He queeried hopefully. She stopped working for a moment, chewing on her lip and staring into space.
"Not sure," She decided firmly, "Give us y'number though and I'll call ya if anything comes up." Mike nodded his thanks and scribbled his mobile on a bogus ticket - placing it in her waiting fingers.
"Thanks a lot Cass, I'm sure I'll see you around."
"Anytime!" She winked goodbye and disappeared back behind the bar.
"Bring on that coffee!" Were Laela's next words. Amen to that, Mike thought.
More recent Mike/Venno story. 3 years have past since the rest of that stuff, so...enjoy.
